For the opening of this exhibition, Shigeru Mizuki, creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro will provide a taped video interview talking about his inspirations for GeGeGe no Kitaro and what exactly “Yokai” are and where we can expect to find them. The opening will also feature live talks by some of Mr. Mizuki’s long time associates, such as Yukio Mura, Mr. Mizuki’s younger brother and general manager of Mizuki Production. Seiichi Yano, CEO of YANOMAN CORPORATION, will speak on his motivations for reproducing the Yokaido Road series for international distribution. Mie Ikeda, Co-producer of the exhibition, will provide historical perspective on Yokai. A special feature of the opening is a taped interview with Takashi Murakami – one of Japan’s most accomplished contemporary artists – who has been highly influenced by the works of Shigeru Mizuki. He has gained acclaim for producing a series of cover artwork for hip-hop artist Kanye West in 2007 and has presented a mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, which will travel around the world.
