In a narrow sense, design is closely linked with consumption (objects), therefore with lifestyle. The production of modern consumer goods requires design that combines two contrasting elements: uniformity for mass production with a unique identity. In cities, the process of production and consumption experience high intensity, the amount of things available is always maintained also with a high level of variety. Cities have then become very competitive locations, frenzied in both the amount and variety of “personalities” of objects consumed—a way of being busy that not only rules public spaces, but has also begun to creep into private spaces through media and information technology.

The city itself is a product of design on a huge and exhaustive scale. How is the city, as a design, related to other objects of consumption, related to the people who live in it? How are the city and its spaces consumed? In such a situation, people tend to take two extreme sides: between being carried away by and identifying themselves with the objects, judging themselves and letting other people judge them based on their relationships with those objects; or becoming an onlooker, observing and completely maintaining a distance, watching objects come and go.

How are the arts practiced in such conditions? Do arts practices have to play a heroic role in saving everyone? Or do they play the wise clown, who by meddling disrupts the conditions of those two extreme points? Can arts practices still be useful in providing inspiration?
