Actors by Niniek L. Karim, Putri Ayudya, Sita Nursanti, Sitok Srengenge, Whani Darmawan

This play interprets and recreates one of the tragic sections of the Bharatayudha, the civil war between the Kurawa and Pandawa. In this play written by Goenawan Mohamad, Karna is a figure who has been marginalized from the existing clans.  Although in the wayang kulit or shadow play, he fights on the side of the Kurawa, Karna is actually the son of Kunthi, the queen and mother of the five Pandawa princes. Thus Karna is someone who has always been the “other”, one who finds his dignity from war and death. Like “zero”, Karna is nothing, and because of that he can become anything. Karna is a story about a person’s identity-or the lack of that identity.

This play is in the form of four monologues performed by Sitok Srengenge (Karna), Niniek L. Karim (Kunthi), Sita Nursanti (Radha), Whani Darmawan (Parasurama), and Putri Ayudya (Surtikanti).
