Jakarta Event - Malacca Ensemble

Malacca Ensemble

August 5th 2011

Playing world music, the Malacca Ensemble was formed in 2007 to take part in preserving traditional music through arrangements and compositions that are more popular and modern. Pioneered by Hendri Lamiri (violin), this music group consists of Demas Narawangsa (drums), Indro Hardjo Dikoro (bass), Yaser Arafat (percussion), Butonk Olala (accordion), Faisal (guitar), Rio Zee Rinaldo (keyboard), Eunique Shalom (vocal)—almost every member of this group is a composer or professional musician skilled at playing a range of musical instruments.

Not only do they present the nuances of Indonesian traditional music, the Malacca Ensemble also embraces various other kinds of music and sounds, originating in China, Arabia, Eastern Europe, and India.  They have performed in numerous musical events and held solo concerts, like in the Malaka Street Jazz Festival, Riau (2008); Java Jazz Festival, Jakarta (2009); Rain Forest World Music Festival, Sarawak, Malaysia (2010); World Economic Forum, Davos, Swiss (2011). The group has also performed at the British International School, Jakarta (2009); Bentara Budaya, Jakarta (2010); Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (2010); and in Benteng Rotterdam, Makasar (2011).
