Migration and Cultural Heritage

January 20th – February 18th 2011

Stories of Javanese in Suriname, Indonesia and the Netherlands
Erasmus Huis presents a number of his photographs picturing the manner in which Javanese people in the Netherlands express their identity and culture.

Three large portraits represent people of Javanese descent who feature in the book “Migration and Cultural Heritage”.

Additional photographs reflect the history of Javanese people in Suriname. The photographs come from the collection of KITLV (Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies).

Matte Soemopawiro, Photographer
Born in Suriname, Matte Soemopawiro moved to the Netherlands in 1975. A three year study in photography at Amsterdam Academy shaped young Matte into a culture photographer. Capturing the right moment at the right time still drives him endlessly. In his own words: “Unique moments pass you by only once”.
