It was as though the spirits of the British soldiers or the East India Sepoy troops from Madras who once guarded and died in Bencoolen, had edged me on to do so for the good of what remains of this fort. This brings about a special bonding between the people of Bengkulu and me. -Believe it or not!

Not your ordinary fisherman, Bengkulu's black coal beaches

Once we truly learn to appreciate our environment, we will know the difference between fresher airs to breathe, the immense beauty and food that nature provides yet cruelly forced to sacrifice. While we understand economic growth and needs, we helplessly witness the obliteration of nature, destroyed by mankind's negligence, operated by selfish people, who refuse to see the aftermath damage caused, where the ultimate results of total economic losses and health perils can be foreseen. The future generations have the right of share, for purer air and a cleaner environment. The elders or those in charge have no grounds to destroy those future rights. Unless the proper environmental standards are enforced for mining and post-mining land use objectives, in due course, there will be nothing more to reap or to enjoy, on the contrary just to suppurate.-LN, observation written January 9th 2010.

Fried Chicken season with turmeric in green chilli

It is always fun experimenting with ingredients, creating new recipes, especially when it has health benefits. It also takes the boredom out of moderate day to day routine cooking. Today, I am going to work through green chillies and marinated turmeric for the chicken. Green chillies and red chillies scientifically labelled as capsicum frutescens cousins to the species capsicum annuum or bell peppers may appear frightfully fiery, on the contrary in taste, it is not. When the seeds and whitish membrane are removed, most chillies immediately lose its peppery zap. It is the smaller green chillies or chilli 'padi' and red chillies that produce more super heat acid, a burning sensation by the relief of capsaicin to the tongue. This then relay signals to the brain which releases the body's natural pain killer- the endorphins. The red cayenne peppers contain more capsaicin than the green chillies which makes it twice hotter.

Baked salmon in mayonnaise topped with tobiko

This is truly a healthy, mouth-watering meal that is quick to make and should be served hot. Done in ten minutes, no salt and sugar needed the infusion of mayonnaise and tobiko, enhances the flavourful trend of Europe with Japanese. Baking fish with mayonnaise is a European concept followed by the Spanish. A fresh cup of any brewed tea variety, without sugar goes so well to wash down the cream. Although I love to have my salmons raw with soy sauce and a dash of sesame oil, there are days when cooking the salmon brings on a different carte du jour, to the dinning table for family and friends to delightfully savour the meal. The basic ingredients for this menu are salmon, mayonnaise, and processed egg roe called tobiko, a Japanese version of the caviar.

Welcoming the Year of the Tiger Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta

The Chinese New Year - also known as the Spring Festival - is celebrated in the second month after the Winter Festival. Every night on the same street, thousand of swallow birds' would line the electric cables to tweet, chat, squawk and hum. Strange though, the lines of perched birds end, about 50 meters towards the traffic light near the roundabout of that street. I wonder why? When I return the next morning to capture this wonderful scene, the birds were gone, no where in sight.

Bengkulu's British Cemetery Turns into open laundry

Reclamation of land and modernization of a town or place is not a problem. However, some sense of the preservation of historical heritage in buildings and sites should be conserved for this allows the rights of the younger generation and their siblings to savour the heritage. The rights to observe cultural history and its evidences of the people who once lived or played as an important factor in the evolution and development of a country. Of diminishing natural diversity and priceless British historical sites
An amazing four and a quarter mile coastline
of fresh Pine trees line her beaches
One of Indonesia's greatest assets is her regions of natural resources and rich historical sites. This immense country is 5,151 km between Asian and Australia which divides the Pacific and Indian Oceans at the equator, is also fortified with an incredible diverse of native and foreign cross cultural experiences.

2010 is supposedly, 'visit Indonesia Museum Year' and also one of the provinces, 'Visit Bengkulu Year', and therefore, together with my daughter and husband and friends, decided this January to pop into Bengkulu. My husband now retired; in 2000 was one of the eight candidates to run for governor. He however withdrew his candidacy upon realizing that wining the governorship in Bengkulu was more about money and hidden gloves politics rather than being elected to run and serve with a mission to develop Bengkulu. He loves Bengkulu, has numerous distant relatives there and he is proud of the city's cultural and historical heritage.

Exhibition: Landing Soon

The three year running artist-in-residence program entitled Landing Soon by Cemeti Art House in collaboration with Gallerie Heden, The Hague has come to an end.

Children eagerly wait for their birthday throughout the year and adults enjoy being pampered and appreciate if someone holds a birthday celebration for them.

As people gradually began to understand the lunar cycles, they started to develop the tradition of celebrating birthdays. In modern age, it is customary to treat someone especially well on his birthday. Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta is launching the Flash Your Age promotion for birthday celebrant. The promotion is an age-based dining discount programme that will start on 1 January 2010 and run throughout the year.

With Flash Your Age, getting older can be so much fun and a birthday means so much more. Birthday celebrants commemorating their special day at Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta on their birth date will enjoy a dining discount equivalent to their age. The discount percentage will be taken off the food bill according to the guest's age. The discount varies from any number of ages. It is an expensive way to look for oil. Chevron Corp. is paying nearly $500,000 a day to the owner of the Clear Leader, one of the world's newest and most powerful drilling rigs. The new well off the coast of Louisiana will connect to a huge platform floating nearby, which cost Chevron $650 million to build. The first phase of this oil-exploration project took more than 10 years and cost $2.7 billion, with no guarantee it would pay off.

Chevron came here, an hour-long helicopter ride south of New Orleans, because so many of the places it would rather be big, easily tapped oil fields close to shore, have become off-limits. Western oil companies have been kicked out of much of the Middle East in recent decades, had assets seized in Venezuela and seen much of the U.S. roped off because of environmental regulations. Their access in Iran is limited by sanctions, in Russia by curbs on foreign investment, in Iraq by violence. So, Chevron and other major oil companies are moving ever farther from shore in search of oil. That quest is paying off as these companies discover unexpectedly large quantities of oil that only they have the technology and financial muscle to find and produce.

Sony MP3 Walkman W series techno evolution

Just before the Christmas and New Year holidays 09, Sony's legendary audio brand, the walkman released their latest W series Walkman. Fresh Marlin fish that appears in colour and semi tough texture looks like the mahi fish and can be differentiated by the circles and white strip fats on its lovely pink meat. The marlins fish's circles and fat strips are more defined. Both fishes, however, make great fish steaks. When I make this for the family it's usually for lunch as a complete meal. You have your carbohydrates, vegetables, herbs and goes well with blanch broccoli and sliced chilled kiwi fruit on the sides. The children will really love this especially when you add a glass of ice cold coco-cola. The fillings are melted Kraft cheese with mushrooms, garlic and cilantro leaves. The concept of this recipe is an original of mine by infusing cheese and mushroom into mash potatoes. The mushroom and ball idea is something like bitter ballen except there is a difference in flavor and texture. Truly a mouth watering tummy filling bonanza, also a great idea when friends pop in.

PLACEBO Concert Live in Jakarta

Placebo are an alternative rock band formed in London in 1994, currently consisting of Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal and Steve Forrest. Despite the fact the new forms had first appeared as distortions, they seemed to fill a need and quickly spread throughout Europe. "The Triumph of the Baroque" is an exhibition of architectural models, on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC through October 9. As students of the art of the period look deeper into its essential character, they have tended to extend the influence of baroque elements, which are now recognized to have stretched from Rome to Amsterdam and from 1600 to 1750.

Profile - The Library

Listing of famous and interesting people profile in the Roving World

Chile a natural inspiration

Chile lies in the southeast of South America, between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, stretching for 2604 miles and encompassing impressive climatic and geographical contrasts. The driest desert in the world can be found in the far North and in the center of the country the landscape switches to fertile farmland, beautiful beach resorts on the coast and ski slopes in the mountains. In the South the geography changes once again, turquoise lakes, thick virgin forests, with a backdrop of volcanoes right down to the far South with the thousand year old glaciers and ice fields of Patagonia and the Antarctica. Chile's islands also offer interesting tourist attractions: Easter Island (or Rapa Nui) with its archeological treasures; Robinson Crusoe Island, well-known for its fauna and vegetation; and Chiloe, famous for its mysticism and unique folklore.

Hand hygiene, helps to contain viruses

Every year on planet earth, we hear of some new epidemic or disease either from our own illness, family and friends experiences or through the mass media. Indonesia cuisines offer a variety of its ethnic groups and culture each with their own signature food, although they may have similar names. The word warung also spelt as waroeng origins comes from a small eatery or food stalls usually made in bamboo or wood seen outdoors or along the streets. Nowadays, warungs or waroengs to keep its identity can also be found in building offices or with a modern twist to its interior.

EATON Asian hawker's food in Modern settings

Food served at EATON diner located at Citos or Cilandak Town Square Food Mall In South Jakarta, is perhaps one of the best Malaysian-Singaporean hawker food cuisine and concept there is. It is here where, in the Neolithic, some of the most prolific European cultures, Cucuteni and Gumelnita, flourished.
Known by the Greeks under the name of Gets, and by the Romans as Dacians, the ancient inhabitants of the present Romanian territory were first mentioned by Herodotus.
Enigmatic and solitary, the Dacian fortified settlements and strongholds that have been preserved from those times were built and defended with his life by the last Dacian king, Decebalus. However, the oldest fortified towns, the ones on the Black Sea shore, belonged to Greek colonists.
Dacia was conquered by Emperor Trajan after two of the most glorious wars of the Roman history, in 106 AD. The Romanian people was formed following Roman colonization, and, amidst migrating waves, miraculously preserved its unity, including that if its language, spoken without dialectal variations. It is only one thousand years later that the firs Romanian states are formed. Eating well in context healthy food consumption, irrespective of being rich, broke, or poor, is truly an art to master for everyone, who takes eating and bringing food to the table for the family seriously. Buying fresh food does require some form of research. It is important to know where the food and perishable stocks are coming from and how hygienically stocked are foods from the suppliers and the grocers. Do they meet the required standard for a healthy and safe consumption? Imagine consuming poison, excessive formalin, or food adulteration in your diet? You’re be as good as the living dead!
In Jakarta, the wicked criminals especially during the fasting month often supplies to the wet traditional markets, tainted meat and a number of edible products like bean curd, instant noodles, even in meats and salted fish have often been found with excessive formaldehyde to extend the perishable food shelf life. Formaldehyde is a chemical use to embalm the dead and is not fit for consumption and it can cause devastating effects. The criminals also often laze their food supplies exceeding the standard health permissible levels of sodium benzoate, cyclamate and borax. Therefore, it is advisable to really get to know the people you buy your food stuff from. And if you have a habit of eating street food, take time out to gather information as to where he/she obtains her supplies from. Eating safely is just as important as eating healthy.

The All American Rejects "I Wanna Rock Tour" 2009

The All American Rejects

Shang Palace Offers Malaysian-Chinese Cuisine

Shang Palace, the Chinese restaurant that specialises in authentic Cantonese cooking, offers guests distinctive fusion with its Malaysian Chinese Cuisine promotion. Food lovers will enjoy the mixture of the two cultures in eight dishes especially prepared by Chinese Chef Benson Fok and his team. The promotion runs up to August 23th 2009.

Chinese culture has long influenced tradition around the world. Blending with the local customs it affects, it creates a unique combination on each culinary culture. Malaysian Chinese cuisine is derived from mainland China. Historically, Chinese communities who migrated to Malaysia started to develop dishes using Chinese base products with Malaysian local ingredients and method of cooking. The combination has become a culture of its own.

Why does the images of real war looks so frighteningly painfully and horrible. We are like the false witnesses of wars, for we only witness what see through edited visual media like television, story books, films and others. Therefore, the imagination of wars in our minds is often closely related with death, murder, slaughter, rape, torture and bloodshed. Wars we know through history painfully existed occurred when men preferred conflict than settlements. Millions have suffered and died according to the world’s noble historians.
In an Exhibition held by Salihara Gallery in Jakarta on July 16 2009, is exactly what 13 Indonesian artists tried to communicate through arts and forms, to keep us in the terrible circumstance that our generation has never experienced, that is the war. The forms however, were neither gruesome nor horrifying; basically images of military were projected like toy soldiers. The artists failed to elaborate on the concept of war rather their artworks merely represented the human form and uniforms in history.

The NLD political detainees are severely punished for lawfully winning 80% of the electoral vote in 1990. The military junta refusing to admit defeat in the 1990 elections had thus silenced the opposition through a reign of terror, intimidation, harassment, torture, appalling conditions inside Burma's squalid prisons and makeshift prisons. Political detainees are banned from receiving family visits and denied proper medical care. These are atrocious human rights crimes conducted on a people during a non-war status.

The Nine Muses Club

YEPPY ROMERO

It is fun in the kitchen when you brave odds by cooking up a meal you never tried cooking before and then its taste so full of flavours. I remember a friend once said to me, that I should open a restaurant. But I think that going into the restaurant business requires not only great food but good management and marketing, and I do not have the time for that. I rather dine at a restaurant to taste the flavours of different chefs.
I believe that cooking and meals presentation at home for the family, friends and even for myself, is important and done as a treat. Many people do not care the way meals are created and presented in the home. Meals cooked are usually routine meals. The steam prawns with a cup of clear soup is a full meal and requires no rice to compliment the dishes.

The 51th anniversary of Bali Province with the road race INTERNATIONAL BALI 10K

INTERNATIONAL BALI 10K is a program of Bali Provincial Government, organized by Bali Government Tourism Office in cooperation with Ministry Cultural and tourism of Indonesia, City/Regency Government, PB PASI, PASI Provincial Office with Matahari Convex as its Official Event Organizer.

However, making a really delicious strong beef flavour curry, now that is something else. In most households I had observe that when beef curry is cooked, the meat is added right away into the curry ingredients, liquid or water added then left to simmer. But when I cook beef curry, in order to really obtain that true beefy flavour, I place beef chunks into a pressure cooker with beef bouillon cubes, bay leaves and cinnamon sticks. It was the first of a long series of travels. Hustinx used photography and film while visiting the then Dutch East Indies in the late 1930s and later also India, Pakistan and Ceylon, immediately after their independence.

The exhibition "Travels of the Past" consists of a selection of travel photographs, made by Alphons Hustinx in the 1930s and 1950s. His impressions of tranquil landscapes, fuming volcanoes, street scenes and encounters with people in everyday life present an intriguing image of an exotic world as seen through the eyes of a western photographer. The exhibition shows also a film Hustinx shot while travelling the tropical archipelago, the first Dutch colour film.

Music & Electricity: Strange Attractors

MUSIC and ELECTRICITY: STRANGE ATTRACTORS

The metropolis with a population of two million is bisected by the mighty flow of the Danube with hills and valleys on the Buda side and the flat, low-lying Pest on the other. The riverside panorama has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Anybody who has ever seen it illuminated by night can understand why.

A fossilized imprint has been found here of an ancient Miocene-period vine leaf, a common ancestor of today’s grape varieties, from which it can be seen that grapes are indigenous to Tokaj. This is thanks to the exceptional microclimate, the volcanic and post volcanic activity which created the characteristic soil, the gentle slopes with favourable aspects, and the autumn mists rising from the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. The oak trees used for the barrels also grow locally and the special mould that has colonized the walls of the cellars helps the wine mature. The end product, referred to by the French king Louis XIV as the wine of kings and the king of wines, is considered to have medicinal properties to this day.

Acar Asia's Renowned Spicy

Acar is curry vegetable pickles served as a condiment to a main course or meal. It is a very popular pickled spicy salad found mainly in countries like Malaysia, Singapore and India. Indonesia also has her own recipe of Acar, a mixture of cucumber, sliced carrots, sliced red chilies, marinated in vinegar, sugar, pepper and salt without the curry spices or the antioxidant plant turmeric.

Malaysians Butter King Prawns

Malaysian love their recipe of butter prawns fried in butter and flavoured with curry leaves. Strange but I had a hard time looking for curry leaves, dried or fresh in Jakarta. So I will use fresh salam leaves and fresh shredded lengkuas.

Whenever I loose desire for food, I have this dish prepared to boost my appetite. It’s a strange combination of curry paste, pineapple fruit and dried salted fish. I really have no idea of the origins of this cuisine although I suspect it to be typically Singaporean. I first laid eyes on it, in my mother’s kitchen. My mother is European and Arab, she is a Leicester, so where she picked up the recipe is beyond me or perhaps from her mother. Now, my daughter is seeing this dish in my kitchen. My daughter has yet to try this dish, she is hard to feed, too choosy in her meals that sometimes I run out of menus, ‘as to what to cook’. We don’t have the same menu all the time. Meals at home are like dining out. I try to make meals as delicious and presentable, so the family can enjoy good wholesome foods.
In this dish, I have thrown in some lady’s fingers or Okra, my own idea. Buying Okra in the super market isn’t fun because the veggies are often vacuumed packed, leaving the consumer without the choice of picking the smaller green ones. The large Okras are usually too tough and woody in taste. Therefore, when picking Okras, choose the smaller ones and look at the tips of the veggie.

At the curve, the driver stopped because there was an on coming car also making the turn. The car also stopped as both vehicles tried to give way for a smooth passage. In the midst of that, all of a sudden, we heard a loud bump and then a cracking sound. Both drivers of the vehicles, winding down the windows looked at the wheels to see what had happened. Passing by after hitting the cars was two riders on a motorbike. We did not yet know the damages to the car at this point. When our vehicle was able to pass freely, from a distance, we saw the motorbike up ahead. I instructed my driver to chase the monkey. After a brief chase, we caught up with the two hit and run suspects and ordered them down from their bikes with plate number F 5358 D (F is from Bogor) . We, in front of the suspects and street witnesses, examined and photograph the scene and access the damages. The wheel cub of the car was reaped and damage. The metal hood covering was dented and paint scrapped off. The rear section of the car was also dented with the paint scrapped off.

CERAMICS OF EGLANTIER STUDIO, PEJATEN VILLAGE (BALI)

The Dutch ceramic artist Hester Tjebbes came in 1983 to the pottery village of Pejaten in Bali, where she advised on a technique of a simple, high-fired, hand-thrown and hand-decorated product. This turned into a development project funded by the Dutch HIVOS Foundation. After a lot of experimenting and studying Balinese classical shapes and decorations, the technique and designs that were developed have spread and hundreds of potters in Pejaten today make a living with it. This success was also due to bapak Tantri, who ran the village as his family, with authority, intelligence and lots of energy. In 2003 Hester Tjebbes moved her French Eglantier studio to Pejaten, in order to make the kind of pots she always wanted to make. She works with 6 artists that she trained 20 years ago. She told them that she is tired of seeing cheap commercial pots, that the studio must focus on quality, that sales are important, but not the first interest. After 6 years, she is proud to present the exceptional ceramics of Eglantier. Some very big sizes, like the old Martavans, others fine elegant porcelain. In times of mass produced, industrial and often disposable objects, we do need signs of real material and human skill to compensate for the lack of intrinsic values elsewhere.
